摘要:For over a decade, large-scale research programs have advertised a roadmap predicting exponential progress in the number and performance of qubits. These expectations have (so far) been met, and the technology has recently reached a stage termed noisy intermediate-scale quantum computing (NISQ) that allows for limited demonstrations of quantum advantage over classical computers. However, the road ahead is marked by new challenges. The number of qubits on a quantum device still needs to be scaled up by orders of magnitude to achieve error stabilized computation, and tremendous work is needed to develop algorithms that can function efficiently and accurately within the architectural limitations of real quantum computers. This talk will provide an overview of the field, starting with a review of the conceptual promise and current technological state of the art. I will look at specific examples from AI to materials simulation to highlight rapid recent developments and persistent bottlenecks for quantum computing algorithms.
报告人简介:Dr. L. Andrew Wray is a research scientist at the quantum computing company BlueQubit and ran a research group at New York University (NYU) from 2014 - 2023. He holds a Ph.D. in Condensed Matter Physics from Princeton University (2010) and a B.A. in Physics from the University of California, Berkeley, and conducted pre-doctoral research at the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. After completing his Ph.D., Wray led research projects at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) and Stanford Institute for Materials and Energy Sciences (SIMES) prior to joining the NYU faculty. Wray’s research focuses on the discovery of powerful new approaches to materials simulation, and the characterization and manipulation of quantum states inside materials.
