Abstract

Self-consistent mean field approaches based on effective Hamiltonians are well-known and very useful tools in nuclear physics. Here, we concentrate our discussion on the covariant (relativistic) versions. Historically, the exchange (Fock) terms were dropped and only the direct(Hartree) terms were kept and adjusted accordingly, for no other reason than avoiding the computational complexity. This corresponds to the many Relativistic Mean Field (RMF) applications in the literature.

Where are we standing today? We will show that self-consistent relativistic approaches including exchange (Fock) terms are quite feasible and they can be carried out in spherical as well as in deformed nuclear systems. Furthermore, these approaches can be extended to describe nuclear excitations in the framework of the relatisvistic RPA[1].

Prof. N.V. Giai is one of pioneering experts in developing the nuclear many-body theory. His well-quoted works concern the relativistic Hartree-Fock approach for finite nuclei, relativistic random phase approximations in giant resonances, and non-relativistic approaches for various many-body systems as well. His current research activity covers mainly two fields where he is involved in theoretical studies: 1)Structure of unstable nuclei studied in a microscopic approach (non-relativistic and relativistic mean field, random phase approximation for particles and quasiparticles; 2)Effects of nuclear structure on the physics of neutron stars. He has more than 250 publications. He is also an excellent organizer for many international collaborations and conferences. In recent years, he has pushed and operated a few Sino-French scientific programs.
